EA with TOGAF & Navigate using ABACUS

By exploring a case study, the course helps students develop a solid target architecture and roadmap that address strategic and tactical requirements of a set of stakeholders. Conexiam’s Navigate is energized by Avolution’s ABACUS. Conexiam’s Navigate is used to provide a consistent, comprehensive toolkit; all relevant elements are included within a pre-populated ABACUS model. In this course, we energize our enterprise architecture activity by using formal models and analytics to deeply understand the interactions between the components of the enterprise.

Our case study is provided in a populated set of formal models. The student will use the formal models to analyze the case; we will not be creating formal models.

TOGAF 9.1 is used to serve and support our activity. When it comes to producing detailed work products, we use Conexiam's Navigate toolkit. The Navigate toolkit is a straightforward customization of TOGAF. It provides a complete set of tools that fleshes out the generic elements of TOGAF 9.1. With Navigate, EA practitioners can perform three key functions:

  1. Describe a target architecture that fulfills a strategy, and identify capability gaps.
  2. Build a roadmap that delivers the changes necessary to achieve the strategy.
  3. Establish the guidelines that will ensure projects realize the strategy.

In order to maximize the capability of an enterprise architecture team, formal modeling and analysis of facts is required. Conexiam’s enterprise architecture team uses Avolution’s ABACUS as a standard enterprise architecture modeling and analysis tool.

Key Learning Objectives

In this 3-day course, you will learn practical techniques and tools in Navigate. ABACUS is used to highlight the power of analytics in understanding the interactions between the components of the enterprise.

This course makes extensive use of case study to create actual enterprise architecture deliverables, culminating in a target architecture and architecture roadmap. You will learn how these deliverables are consumed as case progresses, and how to use Navigate to build key capabilities and trace architecture decisions.

Conexiam will license the Navigate tools used in the course to those who take the "EA with TOGAF & Navigate using ABACUS" course. During the course, each student will have access to a copy of Avolution’s ABACUS.

The Course: EA with TOGAF and Navigate using ABACUS

Included in the Classroom delivery

  • Multiple instructional modules
       - Depending upon the variant selected there are different course content modules
       - 1 covers the Case study
       - 9 cover exercises focused on producing useful EA deliverables
Exercises are done in-class in groups using ABACUS and Conexiam's ABACUS Enterprise server
  • Electronic copy of all Navigate templates and public architecture tools used in the course
  • ABACUS project file and ABACUS Navigate Library

All course material is provided electronically with course slides & exercise materials provided in ABACUS and a binder.

Course Variants

Variants cover the essential purposes of Enterprise Architecture. We align the course to one of the four broad purposes for delivering EA work:

  • EA to support Strategy: provide an end-to-end target architecture, and develop roadmaps of change over a three to ten-year period. In this context, architecture is used to identify change initiatives and supporting portfolio and programs. Set their terms of reference, identify synergies, and govern their execution.
  • EA to support Portfolio: Deliver EA to support cross-functional, multi-phase, and multi-project change initiatives. In this context, architecture is used to identify projects, set their terms of reference, align their approaches, identify synergies, and govern their execution.
  • EA to support Project: Deliver EA to support the Enterprise’s project delivery method in order to assure compliance with architectural governance, and to support the integration and alignment between projects.
  • EA to support Solution Deployment: Deliver EA that is used to support the solution deployment, establish the basis of how change will be designed and delivered, and finally act as a governance framework for change.

We will align the case study exercises to one purpose. By default we focus the course on EA to support Portfolio.

Recommended Prerequisites:

Some EA experience is required. Course is fast-paced and requires that we move quickly through the concepts and activities. It is beneficial to be comfortable with new software. The case study will be worked in groups.

Who Should Attend

  • Enterprise Architects
  • Business Leaders
  • Business Architects
  • Business Analysts

Alternative Courses:

If you would like to learn how to use the world's leading EA framework with a consistent set of tools without the distraction of a modelling tool you may prefer EA with TOGAF & Navigate. In this course we use classic paper templates and whiteboard analysis to drive out linkages and inferences. As with all informal modelling techniques, we will be free to add, extend and skip. We will carry the burden of following the linkages manually.
