What is TOGAF Certification?
TOGAF Certification is evidence that you are serious about your career as an enterprise architect.The Open Group's certification is based on your knowledge and ability to apply the TOGAF Standard.
For TOGAF® Enterprise Architecture Foundation, The Open Group certifies that you possess the following competencies:
- A common language with TOGAF practitioners
- A basic understanding of the TOGAF approach for Enterprise Architecture
Foundation, or Level 1, is a prerequisite qualification for becoming a TOGAF® Enterprise Architecture Practitioner. The Open Group certifies that you possess the following competencies:
- Know how to apply the TOGAF approach to transform and manage change
- Know how to apply the TOGAF method
- Know how to apply TOGAF techniques
The TOGAF Standard is the established best practice to develop and use an enterprise architecture, efficiently describe an enterprise architecture, and develop an enterprise architecture team. It is broken into multiple TOGAF Bodies of knowledge. TOGAF certification shows that you know understand the enterprise architecture body of knowledge.
What about the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition?
The TOGAF Certification program has been updated for the 10th Edition. The certification changes from a end-to-end assessment of your knowledge of the standard to understanding how to use the TOGAF Framework to guide effective change. Passing the TOGAF Certification Exam
There are three exams.
Self-Study for TOGAF Certification
Do not read the TOGAF Standard. Between Fundamentals and the TOGAF Series Guides There are over 2,000 pages in the 10th edition.
This material has been divided into different TOGAF Bodies of Knowledge. The Open Group TOGAF Certification Program conformance requirements X2202 include distinct bodies of knowledge for:
- TOGAF Enterprise Architect Foundation (Level 1)
- TOGAF Enterprise Architect Practitioner (Level 2)
- TOGAF Business Architecture Foundation

We do recommend reading several of the TOGAF Series Guides. Because they are useful. But to prepare for a certification examination you need to know what is examinable.
For the dedicated self-study person start with The Open Group document X2202. Then read the sections of the TOGAF Standard that are examinable.
Start with a sample exam as a diagnostic. Do not study the parts of the exam you are passing. You know those parts. Look at the Learning Objectives to see what they will ask you. Learn the material appropriate for the exam.

Preparing with Accredited Training
The Open Group accredits training providers and training courses. Accredited training is prepares you for the certification examinations. The accreditation confirms the course includes all learning outcomes. Learning objectives are specified in the TOGAF Certification Policy. The intent of The Open Group accreditation process is to assure you that the training can prepare you for the certification exams.
Selecting your Training Provider
Frankly, any accredited training provider can teach you the material to pass the TOGAF 9 Certification Exams. The exams assess whether you know the learning outcomes. The Open Group maintains a list of all accredited e-learning TOGAF training.
