Enterprise Architecture Training
Conexiam's training in enterprise architecture is based on and assists our enterprise architecture consulting practice. Conexiam does two things. We deliver transformative enterprise architecture. We develop world-leading enterprise architecture teams.
Our philosophy, tools, method, and approach are available. Conexiam’s open toolkit lets prospective clients make informed judgement.
We look at three areas to build an effective enterprise architecture training plan:
- Analysis skills
- Specialized techniques
- Work Management Skills
Enterprise Architecture Professional Development
Enterprise architecture is a distinct profession. This profession adheres to a standardized approach known as the TOGAF Standard. It's important to note that this role isn't indicative of seniority and doesn't gauge technical expertise.
Successful enterprise architects change their organizations. They work with their stakeholders to drive effective change. We believe enterprise architecture is the smart way to solve complex problems and deliver on business strategy.
We know our role is to guide effective change.
Enterprise architects use enterprise architecture frameworks to simplify their complex job. They work in architecture domains to improve their analysis.
When we develop EA Teams, we regularly find experienced people figuring out their job. Our training programs are designed to quickly develop useful skills. We are focused on today. Practical, directly usable how-to. Best-practice techniques and method.
Because we believe in frameworks, we have a skills framework. Because we believe in reference materials, we found a useful guide from the Government of Canada. We use this as a simple framework to identify individual barriers to success.
Seven skill profile areas:
- Reading
- Document use
- Writing
- Numeracy
- Oral communication
- Thinking skills
- Problem solving
- Decision making
- Critical thinking
- Job task planning and organization
- Significant use of memory
- Finding information
- Working with others
Most of our Enterprise Architecture Training focuses on #6 - Thinking Skills. In our development engagements we will focus on #7 - Working with Others.
Enterprise Architecture Training for Skills
We break the Thinking Skills apart differently:
- Analysis Skills
- Specialized Techniques
- Work Management Skills
We use Bloom’s Taxonomy. The 6 levels structure the learning outcomes, lessons, and assessments of our training programs.
- Remembering: Recalling knowledge from memory
- Understanding: Interpreting, summarizing, and deriving meaning
- Applying: Using procedures effectively
- Analyzing: Breaking down and organizing for insight
- Evaluating: Making judgments based on criteria
- Creating: Forming new work
We believe that every enterprise architect has a personal responsibility to improve their ability. We have a broad skill-set to maintain and expand. To paraphrase Steven Covey, 'there is a lot of saw to sharpen.'
Enterprise Architecture Analysis Skills
The job of an enterprise architect is to help a stakeholder select the best improvements. In fact, an enterprise architect's value proposition is their ability to analyze.
Yes. the ability to analyze. All the benefits of enterprise architecture arrives after the changes are selected and implemented. Frankly, by then, most architects have moved on. They might even be working out how to improve the changes just going into effect.
How do you help stakeholders decide?
It isn't specialized knowledge. That is the province of a subject matter expert.
It isn't experience. Experience helps with simple change. We get wicked problems.
You need to excel at analysis. You need to take a complex environment apart and simplify it.
You must:
- Find the source of the deficiency
- Find the improvement that removes the deficiency
- Demonstrate the improvement is worth to work and worth the risk

Enterprise Architecture Techniques
We use many techniques. Enterprise Architecture training concentrates on a few techniques that are more common.
Roadmap Method Training
Learn to balance filling gaps with project-execution. Architecture roadmaps require removing risk coming from implementation issues and roadblocks. Includes:
- Baseline and target architecture, gap & Architecture specification
- Alignment of work packages into projects with clear benefits, outcomes, constraints, and priorities
- Removing risk (uncertainty) and issues surrounding benefit harvesting
Enterprise Architecture Trade-off Training
Be able to weigh stakeholder requirement, motivation, and constraint while remaining on a success path to achievable target architecture. Covers:
- Set of stakeholder & organizational preferences
- Set of strategy and operational requirements
- Conflict & alignment
- Political & decision making style
Scenario Development
Scenarios provide a tool to determine how to realize a preferred future and how to fit into a probable future. This course is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge to perform basic scenario development. The scenario involves considering the organization and stakeholder preferences, predicting major external trends, and understanding how different factors interact.
Capability Mapping Training
Learn to develop a Capability Map, Assess the Capability Map, and develop a Capability-based Plan. Uses our Capability-Based Planning Guide.
Includes:
- using Reference Architectures to develop Capability Map
- analytic techniques to assess the Capability Map
- decomposing the Capability to find deficiency
- developing a Capability-based Plan
Formal Modelling Training
Formal modelling requires translating the real-world into a summarized model. You need to understand how to use the restricted options of the formal model. Learn the mechanics of developing formal models and performing analysis.
We use Avolution ABACUS Training and Archi.
We offer specialized training for to develop an enterprise meta-model and content framework to customize your architecture framework.
Enterprise Architecture Certification
Grow your career with effective enterprise architecture training.
TOGAF Certification
TOGAF Certification demonstrated knowledge of the TOGAF Standard.
TOGAF Certification is available from The Open Group for the 10th edition and TOGAF 9. It is earned by passing a Foundation and Certified exam.
TOGAF Enterprise Architect shows your knowledge of the TOGAF Standard, 10th edition. It has a narrower focus than TOGAF 9 and is restricted to the parts of the TOGAF Standard applicable to an enterprise architect.
TOGAF Enterprise Architect Certified (Level 2) shows you can apply the concepts of the TOGAF Standard to develop useful enterprise architecture.
TOGAF 9 Foundation (Level 1) and TOGAF 9 Certified (Level 2) shows your knowledge of the TOGAF Standard, version 9.2. The focus is building a common vocabulary, understanding structure of the standard, and basic concepts. There is limited assessment of your ability to apply the standard, it is largely limited to identifying concepts to use in the architecture development method.
The core of the TOGAF 10 certification is drawn from the Enterprise Architecture Practitioner's Guide.

Application Architecture
This course provides the skills and knowledge to develop a blueprint of the organization’s application architecture and its alignment to the application portfolio - to design the changes necessary to provide a common understanding of the enterprise in order to drive the changes necessary to meet the set of strategic objectives and tactical demands.
In the real world, we rarely have freedom to run to build a greenfield application architecture. Includes how to identify the minimum necessary enterprise architecture constraints:
- Business Architecture
- Information flow
- Organizational & geographic design
- Data Architecture providing the significant constrains in physical data architecture & repository
- Technical Architecture providing the significant constrains in physical technical architecture and in place infrastructure
Information Architecture
Information Architecture straddles the Business Architecture and Information System Architecture domains. Information Architecture focuses on the delivery of information required by business operations to accomplish the business functional mission. This flow of information through the different systems is managed by applications and infrastructure of the enterprise.
Business Architecture Training
The course gives students the skills and knowledge to develop business architecture that is part of an enterprise architecture.
Business architecture involves describing the structure of the business that will best meet the strategy, goals, and objectives. The course will help the student to understand:

Work Management Skills
A high fraction of enterprise architecture work effort is low productivity. Our profession is plagued by missed moments and irrelevant work product.
We base our work management on the concept of knowledge manufacturing. A work-breakdown of required knowledge and work product. We use a Kanboard approach to manage work.
- Develop the skill to take a problem and identify missing knowledge and required work products.
- Aligning the required work product and detail to business cycles (budget, project ideation, project execution, etc.)
- Understanding the business cycle to proactively create consumable work products
Develop the habits, practices, attitude and aptitude to excel.

Conclusion of Enterprise Architecture Training
Enterprise Architecture is a profession. It is not an award for seniority. As a profession, it has a body of knowledge, standard approaches, techniques, and expectations.
To paraphrase Steven Covey, 'there is a lot of saw to sharpen.'
We train enterprise architects. Every day. In class. Through one-on-mentoring. Through joint work developing transformative architecture.
It does not matter whether we are working with a single architect taking an on-line course or developing a global enterprise architecture team. We use the same training tools and guidance.
